Tech Lead Head of Engineering

Context Conversations is a virtual education platform, connecting clients with scholars around the world to discuss thousands of topics ranging from art to history to food to culture. Context Learning was born from Context Travel, an 18-year old tour operator providing cultural and historical tours in over 60 world capitals. Heading into 2020, Context Travel was rapidly growing and gaining market share under a 2-year-old leadership team with venture capital backing, and a growing tech/product team of 10. After the travel and hospitality industry was decimated by COVID-19, rather than sitting on our heels waiting for tourism demand to return, our team of survivors quickly pivoted to bring Context Travel digital. Context Conversations was born within six weeks and has since grown to be an independently sustainable business line which we are planning to integrate with the travel line when tourism returns in 2021 and beyond. Context is looking for a self-starting Director of Engineering who can step into a leadership role from day one and take full ownership of the codebase that the former tech team left behind. This is a rare opportunity to build a strategy and team without needing to also lay infrastructure from scratch. The ideal candidate is looking forward to managing and growing a team of engineers but hasn’t quite left behind their love of rolling up their sleeves and writing code. Your time to start would be spent ~30% coding, 40% overseeing dev contractors and hiring, 30% strategy.We are looking for this candidate to have the following experience:* Minimum of five years developing software* Extensive project management experience, including managing remote freelance developers located around the world, such as in India* Ruby on Rails expert* Shopify Plus / Liquid experience a must* SQL proficiency: Can write moderately complex SQL queries and can use indexes effectively to improve performance* A passion for clean, RESTful APIs; ability to write, debug, and project-manage APIs* DevOps experience including configuring and deploying servers* Experience writing tests; familiarity with monitoring systems like Airbrake and Newrelic* Other nice-to-have experience: Building Chrome Extensions, integrating email, SMS systems like Nexmo, Rspec, Elasticsearch, Fastly, Prerender, server-side delivery in SPAs, github, JIRA, Rackspace and AWS, CDNs, token oauth, experience with Stripe payment systems, Google Apps integration, experience with machine learning and recommender systems, SWIFT* Interest and experience with travelIn addition to the above, we’d like to see the following soft traits:* Embrace lean principles (eliminate waste, deliver frequently, build integrity in, etc.)* Strong analytical and problem solving skills* Humble collaborator and team player* Voracious desire to learn* Believer in the transformative power of cultural travel In exchange, we are thrilled to offer:* A supportive, mission-oriented work environment under an all-female leadership team* Unlimited access to learning and tour experiences* A competitive salary with 401K (+ match) and health insurance* Unlimited PTO* A remote-first work policy* An annual company retreat to connect with international colleagues “IRL” when it is safe to do soThis is a full-time role that we are looking to fill as soon as we find the right candidate.
