Job Summary
This communicator provides integrated external and internal communications support for the Natural Gas Business Unit to support key business initiatives and the goals of the organization. The successful candidate must be comfortable and proficient providing strategic recommendations and guidance to senior leaders. The position will work closely with corporate communications, stakeholder engagement, customer service, environmental, policy and governmental affairs to ensure alignment and advance the national and regional strategies for the Natural Gas Business Unit (Piedmont and MW). This position reports to the Manager of Natural Gas Business Unit Communications. The position assists with providing support to the senior vice president of Natural Gas and the business unit's leadership team including regulatory and community relations, gas operations, major projects and sales and delivery.
Responsibilities
•Enhances the NGBU/company's reputation and builds understanding and support of the company's strategy and supporting initiatives.
•Manages issues and develops messages for internal and external audiences.
•Develops and implements integrated, strategic communications plans and media strategies on high risk and complex issues that have a broad impact on the company. These plans support natural gas operations and capital projects, stakeholder engagement, advocacy and educational efforts/campaigns for legislative, regulatory, operational, reputation management and brand strategies for the NGBU.
•Responds to media inquiries, serving as a company spokesperson; builds and sustains relationships with key reporters/outlets.
•Identifies and generates media opportunities for specific company initiatives through pitching story ideas, conducting media interviews and participating in external events.
•Provides counsel to business groups and senior leaders
•Supports executive positioning efforts and provides communication counsel to senior leaders on specific issues and develops prep materials for media interviews.
•Prepares speeches, presentations, talking points, briefing documents and other communication materials for key external and internal meetings.
•Collaborates with peers at other organizations, companies and trade associations.
•Serves as part of Duke Energy's crisis communications team and participates in storm/emergency response.
•Works independently and receives minimal guidance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related discipline
In addition to required degree, 8 plus years related work experience

Required Qualifications

Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong writer (Knowledge of AP style preferred), including experience preparing executive speeches, presentations, talking points, briefing documents and other communication materials for key external and internal meetings. Writing samples may be requested.
- Strong media relations experience serving as a spokesperson including strategy and message development
- Strong experience developing and implementing communications plans to effectively manage response to complex and emerging issues
- Experience working with senior levels of management and providing executive counsel and coaching for media interviews, presentations/speeches
- Experience representing the company externally with challenging audiences in challenging situations
- Speechwriting experience
- Demonstrated issues management skills.
- Knowledge of utility operations and/or regulatory processes for a utility industry
- Experience in public policy, reputation management, advocacy campaigns and stakeholder engagement
- Ability to work and make decisions independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
- Experience working in a matrix organization
- Experience in crisis communications
